Mithamin Upazila was established on November 7, 1983. The history of development in the upazila is new and unbroken haor area but it is an ancient township. James J. An ancient map of Bengal drawn by Raynell (1781) also mentions Mithamain. In the area, some pronounce it Mithamon, some Mithamin, some Mitamin or Mithamon.The legend about the origin of the name is that there was once a large cluster of reed forests on the outskirts of the village which is now Upazila Sadar. The reed had sweet or sweet juice. From this reed forest came Mithavan and from there Mithaman or Mithamain

The area has been inhabited for centuries. The name of Mithamain can be found in James Rennell's 1781 map of Bengal. The upazila was named after the village of Mithamain. Its etymology is rumored to be that at one time there was a large reed forest in the vicinity of the area.

The language and accent of Mithamain has regional pull of Howrah area. The vocabulary of regional language of Mithamain upazila is very rich. In the face of the local people, regionalism has enriched the language here, brought uniqueness.Mithamain has its own identity in terms of culture. This upazila is a huge repository of Bhatiali songs including Pala songs, Kissa songs, Bicher songs. Ghatu song was very popular in this region at one time.
